Our New Patron - Mr Gerry Campbell, Consul General of Canada

Top level Announcement

Our new Consul General and Patron - Mr Gerry Campbell

On September 1, 2004, there was a big turn out of Canadians to attend the Reception held by the Chamber, Canadian Club, CCA and the Consulate to let fellow Canadians to meet our new Consul General, Mr. Gerry Campbell.

Mr. Campbell has been graciously enough to become our Patron. This tradition has been established since John Higginbotham, Commissioner for Canada in Hong Kong, became our first Patron in 1993.

Mr. Campbell is a fellow alumni of UBC, a few years senior to me, perhaps. Instead of a career in law, he joined the Department of External Affairs during the consolidation of the foreign service in 1978.

He has served in London, Port of Spain, Hong Kong (twice), Kingston and at the Permanent Mission of Canada to the Office of the United Nations in Geneva.

In Ottawa, he has served in a variety of positions. From 1994 to 1997, he was Director General, International Region, at Citizenship and Immigration Canada and, in 1997, he was named Assistant Deputy Minister, Operations. In 1998, Mr. Campbell was appointed as High Commissioner to Nairobi and, in 2002, he was appointed as High Commissioner to Bangladesh. He is married to Edith Ming Wai Hung and they have three daughters.

Mr. Campbell has previously served twice in Hong Kong. It can, therefore, be said that he knows Hong Kong reasonably well.

Mr. Campbell, welcome back to Hong Kong. May I wish you every success in your third tenure of office in Hong Kong.

Spencer Lee
Chairman of CCA
